テキサス州知事
　昔のテキサス州知事は教育もまともに受けていない人が多かった。
かつてgrammar（文法）という言葉は grandma（祖母）という意味だと思っていた無学なテキサス州知事がいた。
ある時彼は狩猟に出かけたが銃を持ってくるのを忘れた。
知事は秘書に電話して銃を持ってくるように命令した。
「閣下、電話がよく聞こえません。済みません、最後の単語がよく聞き取れなかったんです。綴りを言ってくれませんんか？」と秘書が答える。
知事が電話口で怒鳴りつける。「ジーザス（Jesus：イエスキリスト）のG、ユース（youth：若さ）の U、ニューモニア（pneumonia：肺炎）のN、G-U-N、GUN（銃）と言ったんだよ、この間抜け野郎が！」

　アーカンソー州の田舎者
　二人のアーカンソー州の田舎者が道路の両端からお互いに歩いて近づいて来た。
一人の男は手に袋を下げていた。
すれ違った時、もう一人の男が声をかけた。「おい、トミーレイじゃないか、その袋には何が入ってるんだ？」
「鶏だよ」
「何羽入っているか当てたら1羽もらえるかい？」
「あぁ、いいとも。もし数を当てられたら両方ともあげるよ」
「オッケー、うーん、5羽かな？当たってる？」

　50％の降水確率
「どうして芝生の半分だけ水をまいているんですか？」と当惑した旅行者が庭で水まきしているテキサスの住民に尋ねた。
「いやぁ、今日の降水確率は50％だって聞いたもんだからね」

　教育を受けているノースダコタ住民
　ノースダコタで教育を受けている人かどうか、どうやって見分けるか？
入れ墨の綴りが正しい人は教育を受けていると言える。

21-6　Cyanide
　There was a farmer who grew watermelons.
But someone sneaked into his watermelon patch and ate some of them.
After his deep thought, he came up with a clever idea to protect his watermelons.
He made up a sign and posted it in his field.
The next day, the thief showed up and saw the sign:
"Warning! One of the watermelons in this field has been injected with cyanide."
The next day, the farmer surveyed his field and noticed that no watermelons were missing, but the sign was added:
"Now there are two!"

　青酸カリ
　スイカを育てている農夫が自分の畑にスイカ泥棒が入って何個か食べられていることに気付いた。
どうやって泥棒を防ごうかとさんざん考えたあげくに素晴らしいアイデアを思いついた。
彼は看板を彼のスイカ畑に立てかけた。
翌日スイカ泥棒が現れてこの看板を見た。
「警告！この畑のスイカの中に一個だけ青酸カリを注射してあります！」
その翌日農夫がスイカ畑を見回りに来たが、スイカは一個も盗まれていなかった。
ただ看板に次の言葉が付け加えられていた。
「現在は二個に青酸カリが入っています。」

21-7　Three Hillbillies
　Three hillbillies are sitting on their porch in Tennessee.
One says, "Boy, my wife is dumb. She's so stupid that she went shopping today and bought an air-conditioner. Hell, we haven't got no electricity."
The others laugh.
Then the other guy says, "That's nothing, my wife's dumber than that. She went shopping yesterday and had a washing machine delivered."
They all laugh and laugh, because nobody around there has plumbing.
The third hillbilly says, "Well, I reckon my woman got to be the dumbest. Just this morning I was looking in her purse for some change and found six rubbers. Hell, she has no dick!"

　3人の田舎者
　テネシー州の片田舎で、3人の田舎者が家のベランダに腰掛けて喋っている。
最初の男が「俺のカカアはホント馬鹿だっぺ。今日買い物に行ってエアコンを買って来たんだけんど、この辺りは電気が引けていないっていうのによぉ、全く」と言うと、他の二人が大声で笑った。
二番目の男が「そんなのどうってことないズラ。うちのカアちゃんはもっと阿呆だズラ。昨日買い物に行って洗濯機を配達してもらったんだモンね。」と言うと、三人はまた声を合わせて笑う。
というのはこの近所に水道管などは設置されていないからだ。
三番目の男が言う。「でもね、俺っちの女房が一番ぬけているわな。今朝小銭がなくって女房の財布を捜したら、コンドームが6個入っていたんだわ。何を考えているんだか、オチンチンを持っていないアイツが何でコンドームが必要なんだろね」

21-8　Taxidermist
　A guy walked into a bar in Arkansas and ordered a white wine.
Everybody sitting around the bar looked up, expecting to see some pitiful yankee queer.
The bartender looked up and said, "You ain't from around here, are ya? Where ya from, boy?"
The guy said, "I'm from Iowa."
The bartender asked, "What the heck you do in Iowa?"
The guy responded, "I'm a taxidermist."
The bartender asked, "Now just what the heck is a taxidermist?"
The guy said nervously, "I mount animals."
The bartender grinned and shouted out to the whole bar, "It's okay boys, he's one of us! "

　剥製師
　男が一人アーカンソーのバーにやって来て白ワインを注文した。
バーにたむろしていた地元の客の目が、全てこの哀れむべきヤサ男のアメリカ人に注がれた。
（注：男のくせにウイスキーではなく白ワインなどを頼む奴は腑抜けのゲイだ、という観念が古いタイプのアメリカ人にはある）
バーテンがこの男を上目遣いで見ながら尋ねる。
バーテン：「あんた、この辺の人間じゃないね。どこから来たんだい、お兄ちゃん？」
男　　　：「アイオア州からだ」
バーテン：「で、お兄ちゃんはアイオアで一体何をやっているんだ？」
男　　　：「剥製師だ」
バーテン：「その剥製師っていうのは、一体どういうことするんだね？」
男（イライラしながら）「動物を標本にする（mount）職業さ。」
バーテンが、ニヤリとしたり顔でうなずきながら、バー全体に響く大声で叫んだ。
「オイ、みんな、大丈夫だ。こいつは俺達の仲間だ！」

21-9　Smile
　Three dead bodies turn up at the mortuary, all with very big smiles on their faces.
Along with them comes a police inspector to find out how they died.
"First body: Frenchman, 60, died of heart failure while making love to his mistress.
Hence the enormous smile, Inspector," says the Coroner.
"Second body: Scots man, 25, won a thousand pounds on the lottery, spent it all on whiskey. Died of alcohol poisoning, hence the smile."
The Inspector asked, "What of the third body?"
"Ah," says the coroner, "this is the most unusual one. Billy-Bob the redneck from Alabama, 30, struck by lightning."
"Why is he smiling then?" inquires the Inspector.
"Thought he was having his picture taken."

　微笑み
　ニッコリ笑って死んでいる遺体が三体、死体安置所に運ばれて来た。
警部補がやって来てそれぞれの死亡原因を聞くために検死官に説明を求めた。
「最初の死体はフランス人、60歳。愛人とセックスの真っ最中に心臓麻痺を起こして死亡。それゆえ満足そうな 微笑みを浮かべています」、と検死官が説明する。
「二番目の死体はスコットランド人、25歳。1000ポンドの宝くじに当たってその金全部をウイスキーにつぎ込み、アルコ ール中毒で死亡。それゆえ微笑んでいます」と検死官が続ける。
「三番目の死体は？」と警部補が尋ねる。
「あぁ、この男ですね。今まで見たことがないケースです」と検死官。
「ビリーボブ、アラバマ出身、30歳。雷に打たれて死亡」
「なぜ雷に打たれてニ ッコリ笑っているんだ？」と警部補が尋ねる。
「この男はフラッシュを焚かれて写真を撮られたと思ったらしいんですよ」

21-10　Virgin
　In a tiny village lived an old maid.
In spite of her old age, she was still a virgin.
She was very proud of it.
She knew her last days were getting closer, so she told the local undertaker that she wanted the following inscription on her tombstone: 'Born as a virgin, lived as a virgin, died as a virgin."
Not long after, the old maid died peacefully, and the undertaker told his men what the lady had said.
The men went to carve it in, but as the lazy no-goods they were, they thought the inscription to be unnecessarily long.
They simply wrote : 'Returned unopened'

　処女
　小さな村に一人の老婆が住んでいた。
高齢であったが処女で、彼女はそのことを大変誇りに思っていた。
行く先もさほど長くないと考えて、彼女は葬儀人に墓碑は次の様に彫ってほしいと頼んだ。
「処女として生まれ、処女として生き、処女として死す」それから日を追わずして彼女は大往生し、葬儀人は部下に彼女に言われていた通りに墓碑を彫るように命じた。
部下の男達は墓場に行って作業にかかったが、この部下達は怠け者でまともに働かない連中だったので、彼女の墓碑は長すぎて彫るのが大変だから端折ってしまおうと考えた。
墓碑銘は簡単に「未開封のまま返品」。
