06-41　New Corporate Policy
　Dear Employees: It has been brought to management's attention that some individuals throughout the company have been using foul language during the course of normal conversation with their co-workers.
Due to complaints received from some employees who may be easily offended, this type of language will be no longer be tolerated. We do however, realize the critical importance of being able to accurately express your feelings when com municating with co-workers.
Therefore, a list of "TRY SAYING" new phrases has been provided so that proper exchange of ideas and information can continue in an effective manner without risk of offending our more sensitive employees.

TRY SAYING: Perhaps I can work late.
INSTEAD OF: And when the fuck do you expect me to do this?

TRY SAYING: I'm certain that isn't feasible.
INSTEAD OF: No fucking way.

TRY SAYING: Really?
INSTEAD OF: You've got to be shitting me!

TRY SAYING: Perhaps you should check with...
INSTEAD OF: Tell someone who gives a shit.

TRY SAYING: I wasn't involved in the project.

　会社の新しい方針
　当社社員の一部が同僚と交わす日常会話の中に、不穏当な言葉遣いが多々見られることに、会社幹部は危惧を抱いている。こういうふさわしくない言葉遣いを不快に思っている社員からの苦情を鑑みて、不穏当な言葉を使うことを禁ずるものである。しかしながら同僚とのコミュニケーション時に、自分の感情を正確に伝えることは非常に大切なことであることを会社は充分理解しているので、下記の「望ましい表現方法」に基づき、繊細な社員の感情を妨げることなく、極めて妥当な表現方法により、各人の考えや情報を相互に正しく伝え合うことを、会社は期待するものである。

06-45　Drive-through teller
　A sign in the Bank Lobby reads:
"Please note that this Bank is installing new "Drive-through" teller machines enabling customers to withdraw cash without leaving their vehicles. Customers using this new facility are requested to use the procedures outlined below when accessing their accounts. After months of careful research, MALE & FEMALE procedures have been developed. Please follow the appropriate steps for your gender."

MALE PROCEDURE
1. Drive up to the cash machine.
2. Put down your car window.
3. Insert card into machine and enter PIN (Personal Identification Number).
4. Enter amount of cash required and withdraw.
5. Retrieve card, cash and receipt.
6. Put window up.
7. Drive off

FEMALE PROCEDURE
1. Drive up to cash machine.
2. Back a car to align car window with the machine.
3. Set parking brake, put the window down.
4. Find handbag, remove all contents on to passenger seat to locate card.
5. Tell person on cell phone you will call them back and hang up.
6. Attempt to insert card into machine.
7. Open car door to allow easier access to machine due to its excessive distance from the car.
8. Insert card.
9. Re-insert card the right way.
10. Dig through handbag to find diary with your PIN written on the inside back page.
11. Enter PIN.
12. Press cancel and re-enter correct PIN.
13. Enter amount of cash required.
14. Check makeup in rear view mirror.
15. Retrieve cash and receipt.
16. Empty handbag again to locate wallet and place cash inside.
17. Write deposit amount in check register and place receipt in back of checkbook.
18. Re-check makeup.
19. Drive forward 2 feet.
20. Reverse back to cash machine.
21. Retrieve card.
22. Re-empty hand bag, locate card holder, and place card into the slot provided.
23. Give appropriate one-fingered hand signal to irate male driver waiting behind you.
24. Restart stalled engine and pull off.
25. Redial person on cell phone.
26. Drive for 2 to 3 miles.
27. Release Parking Brake.

男性客用マニュアル
１．現金支払機の横に車を進める。
２．車の窓を開ける。
３．キャッシュカードを機械に差し込み、暗証番号（PIN）を入力する。
４．引き出す現金額を入力し、お金を引き出す。
５．カード、現金、レシートを受け取る。
６．車の窓を閉める。
７．車をスタートさせて、支払機から離れる。

女性客用マニュアル
１．現金支払機の横に車を進める。
２．車の窓が支払機の横になるよう、行き過ぎた車をバックさせる。
３．駐車ブレーキを引いて車を停めてから、車の窓を開ける。
４．ハンドバックを取り出して中味をすべて助手席の上にばら撒き、キャッシュカードを見つける。
５．かかってきた携帯電話に「後からかけ直すから」と返事をして、電話を切る。
６．現金支払機にカードを挿入させようと手を伸ばす。

17．現在の預金残高を小切手用紙記録欄に記入し、レシートを小切手帳の最後のページに挟み込む。
18．もう一度顔の化粧を確かめる。
19．2フィート(60cm)ほど車を前に動かす。
20．車を現金支払機の場所まで後進させる。
21．取り忘れていたキャッシュカードを抜き取る。
22．もう一度ハンドバックの中味を洗いざらい出してカードケースを見つけ、キャッシュカードを所定のスロットに仕舞い直す。
23．後ろでイライラしている男性客の車に向かって、中指一本を立てて（FUCK!の意味）正しい挨拶をする。
24．停止しているエンジンをかけて、車をその場所から動かす。
25．携帯電話にかかってきた先程の人物に、電話をかけ始める。
26．そのまま2〜3マイル先まで車を走らせる。
27．どうも走り方がおかしいと思い、入れっぱなしだった駐車ブレーキを元に戻す。

06-46　We haven't got the electricity
　A door-to-door vacuum salesman goes to the first house in his new territory.
He knocks, a real mean and tough looking lady opens the door, and before she has a chance to say anything, he runs inside and dumps cow patties all over the carpet.
He says, "Lady, if this vacuum cleaner don't do wonders cleaning up that horseshit, I'll eat every chunk of it."
She turns to him with a smirk and says, "You want ketchup on that?"
The salesman says, "why do you ask?"
She says "We just moved in and we haven't got the electricity turned on yet."

　まだ電気が通じていないんですけど
　個別訪問して真空掃除機を売り込むセールスマンが、新興住宅地域を訪れた。
ある家のドアをノックすると、性格がきつく意地悪そうな主婦がドアを開けたので、彼女が口を開く前にセールスマンは家の中に入り込み、牛の糞をカーペット一面にばらまいた。
そして「奥さん、この真空掃除機の奇跡をご覧下さい。この掃除機で糞尿を綺麗に吸い取れなかったら、私が自分の口で食べて片付けてみせます！」と高らかに宣言した。
主婦は歪んだ笑い顔をセールスマンに向けると、「じゃ、ケチャップをふってから食べる？」と聞いた。
「エ？質問の意味がわかりませんが？」とセールスマンが尋ねると、「うちはまだここに引っ越したばかりで、電気がまだ通じていないんですよ」と彼女は答えた。

06-47　Environmental problem
　A cashier tells an older woman in the line at the store, "You should bring herown grocery bags, because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment!"But is this cashier right?

　Back then, we returned soda bottles or beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

　Back then, we drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We commute by train or bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.

　Back then, we walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower vehicle every time we had to go two blocks.
We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store.

　Back then, we had one TV or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. We blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used old newspaper to cushion it, not plastic bubble wrap.

　Back then, we washed the baby's diapers, because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling washer-dryer. Wind and solar power really did dry the clothes.

　Isn't it sad the current generation laments how environmentally-unfriendly we old folks are?

　環境問題
　店のレジ待ちの列に並んでいた老女に向かって、レジ係が「ビニール袋の使い捨ては環境に害を及ぼしますから、自分の買い物袋を持参して下さい。あなたたち年寄り世代は、環境保護ということに疎いですね」、と言った。はたして、このレジ係の言ったことは正しいだろうか？

　昔、我々の世代は喉が渇いたら水道の蛇口から直接水を飲んだ。今みたいに水を飲む時はいつもプラスチックのカップやボトルを使っていなかった。我々の時代は電車やバスで通勤し、子供達は自転車か徒歩で学校に通った。今みたいに自分の母親の車を24時間待機のタクシー代わりに使って、通学などしていなかった。

　昔、我々は食料品店まで歩いて買い物に行った。今みたいに２ブロックの距離なのに、300馬力の車を使って買い物に行くということはなかった。店の二階へは階段を歩いて上った。というのは、当時エスカレーターなど店にはなかったからだ。

　昔、我々の世代はテレビやラジオは一家に一台が普通であって、各部屋ごとにテレビを置いていなかった。台所で食材を混ぜたりこねたりするのは、手で行った。というのは人手をかけずに何でもやってくれる電化製品など、当時はなかったからだ。また割れやすい物を郵便で送る時、我々は古新聞をクッション材として使った。今みたいに化学繊維の梱包用品がなかったからだ。

　昔、我々は赤ん坊のオムツは毎回洗濯して何度も使った。というのは使い捨てのオムツなど当時はなかったからだ。自分達が着る物は洗濯してロープに吊して乾かし、今のように全自動乾燥洗濯機は使わなかった。自然の太陽と風が洗濯した服を乾かしてくれたからだ。

　若い世代が我々年寄りのことを、なんて環境に対して無神経なのかと嘆くのは、少しおかしくないだろうか？

06-48　A super salesman
　After his first day working at a department store, the manager walks up to his new sales man and asked him how many sales he had his first day.
The young man proudly answered, "One."
The manager replied, "Only one, well how much was it for?"
The young man immediately responded "$39,562, Sir."
The manager was too curious to ask what he had sold.
"He was buying some fishing hooks and I told him that he would probably need some stronger line to go with those hooks. He agreed, but before he left I suggested he should buy a new rod to go with his new line and hooks. And to my surprise he bought it as well. So I thought Iwould try to sell him a boat so that he could go out and catch some big fish. After deciding on the boat, he realized that his car wouldn't be able to tow the boat so I showed him the new truck we had and he bought that as well. By the time he had walked out his total was $39562."
The manager was surprised and said to him, "You are a super sales man! A guy comes into buy fishing hooks and you sell him fishing line, a rod, a new boat, and even a truck?"
"No," the young man said, "He came in to our store to buy tampons for his girlfriend and I said to him "Your weekend is pretty much shot. How about fishing yourself?"

　デパート店員初日の仕事を終えた新人営業担当者に、支店長が歩み寄って「今日一日でどの位売ったかね？」と尋ねると、新人店員は誇らしげに「一人のお客さんにセールスしました」と答えた。
「たった一人だけかね？で、いくら売ったんだ？」と店長が聞くと、「39,562ドルです」と若い店員は即答した。
店長はどうやってこの若い店員が売ることが出来たのか興味津々となり、販売内容を尋ねた。
「そのお客は釣り針を買いに来ていたので、私は『その釣り針にはもう少し丈夫な釣り糸が必要でしょう』と、申し上げたんです。お客さんは同意されて釣り糸も買ってくれました。そこで私は『その釣り針と釣り糸を使うには、釣り竿も一回り大きいものが必要でしょう』と提案しましたら、驚いたことにお客さんは新しい釣り竿も買ってくれました。そこで私はついでにボートも売ってやれと思って、『それだけの道具を持って、大きな魚を釣ろうと思ったら、ボートが必要でしょう？』と勧めました。購入するボートの種類を決めた後で、このお客さんは自分の車ではこのボートを牽引して運べないことに気付いたんです。そこで私は新しいトラックがある場所に案内して、これも売りつけることに成功したのです。という訳でお店を出るまでに、このお客さんは総額39,562ドルの買い物をしてくれたのです」
マネージャーは目を丸くして驚き、この新人店員に言った。
「君は店員の鑑だ！釣り針を買いに来た客に、釣り糸、釣り竿、新しいボートと、新しいトラックまで買わせてしまうなんて！」
「いや、正確に言うと、こういうことなんです」と、新人店員は説明を続けた。
「このお客さんは最初自分のガールフレンドのためにタンポンを買いに来ただけなんです。だから僕は『彼女が生理中じゃ、今週末はあまり楽しくないですね。どうです、一人で釣りにでも行ってみたら気晴らしになりますよ？』って釣り針を勧めたのがスタートだったんです」
